3 RCR Dominates Ironman Competition
By Capt Alex Trousdale, IMO, 3RCR
The 2011 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Ironman competition was held over 8 - 9 September this year at CFB Petawawa and involved over 500 competitors. The first day being for brigade members who wished to compete as individuals, and the second day for the competitive teams from each unit. This year, as there were no unit deployments within the Brigade, the competition amongst the teams was fierce. This competitive spirit coupled with almost perfect weather conditions resulted in individuals and teams putting up some incredible race times on the 50 km course, which consisted of a 32 km initial march, 4 km portage, 8 km canoe, and finished off with a 6km March to the finish line.
The 3 RCR competitive team consisted of 32 members drawn from all companies within the Bn. The rules stated that each team had to consist of 1 officer, 1 Snr NCO, and 1 Jnr NCOs. In June the team embarked on an intensive training plan designed to prepare them for the mental and physical challenges of the Ironman competition. As a result of this training the team felt ready for the competition and was eager to show what they were capable of during the event. This was shown when team members Cpl Turk, Pte Wieg, and WO Storring placed 1st 2nd and 3rd in the competition respectively, as well as a total of 6 competitors from 3 RCR placing in the top 10.
Having successfully accomplished their goals for the competition the team did not want to rest on their achievements, and on Monday morning they were back with their companies conducting training for the upcoming deployment to Wainright for Ex MAPLE RESOLVE.
