1 RCR Family Day - 01 October 2011
By Lieutenant Ken Adams, 6 Platoon Commander
On Saturday October 1st the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment welcomed friends and family. This was a "great opportunity for family bonding grouped with developing an appreciation for the job" said Greg Bird, an event participant and member of the 1st Battalion. The event showcased equipment, vehicles, and weapons used by soldiers. Events also included a zip-line, bouncy-castle, balloon artist, and finally a fire power demonstration.
The morning offered many activities which bridged generation gaps by offering fun events for all members of the family. All ages had an opportunity to learn about infantry weapons, dress as a sniper, and ride in a light armoured vehicle. "I would have loved this opportunity when I was a kid," commented Lieutenant Fred Richings. Kids were able to participate in the kiddie commando obstacle course where they applied camouflage and raced against the clock for Ottawa Senator's tickets. After the kids raced through a rigorous obstacle course in the brisk fall air the high adrenaline fun continued. Advanced mountain operators had rigged a zip-line from the balcony all the way across the drill hall. The morning activities ended with a delicious barbeque courtesy of the 1st Battalion cooks.
The afternoon transitioned to the fire power demonstration. The demonstration included real time explosives, most weapons the Canadian infantry utilize and a sniper team to top it all off. The event offered an opportunity for friends and family to view the awesome firepower available to an infantry platoon. The event was a huge success and was enjoyable for both soldier and their families. The event will be greatly anticipated next year. Thanks to all that came out and look forward to putting on an even better show next year.
